Job Description:

The New Mexico Department of Justice is seeking a dynamic and experienced individual to join our team as the Deputy Solicitor General for Civil Appeals. The Deputy Solicitor General will be responsible for managing the Civil Appeals Division of the New Mexico Department of Justice (NMDOJ). This involves managing and coordinating cases entailing constitutional litigation and civil appeals as they arise across the NMDOJ, as well as supervising 3-5 civil appeals attorneys and a professional staff in both the Albuquerque and Santa Fe offices. The DSG will perform both substantive legal work and managerial and/or administrative responsibilities. 

Responsibilities:

  • Advise, train, and/or mentor appellate attorneys and fellows on their issues and the successful handling of constitutional litigation and appeals. 
  • Assist the Attorney General, Chief Deputy Attorney General, and Solicitor General with the analysis and preparation of constitutional litigation and high-level state and federal appeals, including cases that may be filed with the U.S. Supreme Court.  
  • Draft, review, and make recommendations on multistate amicus briefs and letters, and participate in the NMDOJ’s preparation of and management of Attorney General Opinions. 
  • Responsible for recruiting, hiring, and training civil appeals attorneys as appropriate.  
  • Work with other divisions within the NMDOJ to advise on legal issues and appellate strategy.  
  • Manage the NMDOJ’s involvement with appellate statewide and national organizations and committees. 
  • Perform human resource responsibilities including evaluations and performance plans as appropriate. 
  • Serve as the NMDOJ’s liaison with courts and other state agencies as appropriate. 
  • Coordinate press involvement on various matters.

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.  
  • Admission to the New Mexico state bar and in good standing or the ability to acquire a limited law license. 
  • Advanced appellate attorney willing and able to handle both litigation and appellate matters in both state and federal courts on matters related to consumer protection, environmental protection, civil rights, constitutional rights, and other relevant legal areas. 
  • Proven track record of developing and executing successful litigation strategies. 
  • Excellent leadership and management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate a team of attorneys and legal professionals. 
  • Outstanding legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills. 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. 
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines. 
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, equality, and public interest law.
