(ALBUQUERQUE)---Attorney General Gary King's Medicaid Fraud & Elder Abuse Division reports that its investigations have resulted in separate indictments against two Valencia County women on charges including resident abuse and neglect and Medicaid fraud.
60-year-old Sherry Hoff, from Belen, faces 6-12 years in prison and more than $30,000 in restitution after being charged with five felony (2nd-degree) counts of Resident Abuse and Neglect-Exploitation, Larceny, Fraud, Embezzlement and Computer Access with Internet Fraud or Embezzlement and Computer Access with Intent to Defraud or Embezzle. Hoff is accused of befriending elderly victim, Charles Butterfield, in order to steal his financial assets.
Socorro resident Cornelia Mexicano, 37, also faces 6-12 years in prison. Mexicano has been indicted on three felony (2nd-degree) counts of Medicaid Fraud greater than $2,500 and one felony (2nd-degree) count of Fraud stemming from her submission of fraudulent bills as a care provider. The fraudulent billing took place over a 15 month period.
AG King's Medicaid Fraud and Elder Abuse Division is the federally mandated Medicaid Fraud Control Unit for New Mexico and enforces the Medicaid Fraud Act and the Resident Abuse and Neglect Act. The MFEAD investigates and prosecutes Medicaid providers who commit fraud and/or resident abuse, neglect and exploitation in long-term care facilities. The division also pursues civil monetary repayment of Medicaid program funds when a Medicaid provider does not provide adequate services to recipients and participates in multistate cases to recover Medicaid funds that are inappropriately utilized by nationwide Medicaid providers. The MFEAD staff is comprised of attorneys, CPA forensic auditors, law enforcement officers, and nurse medical investigators.
